Saint Cyricus of Tarsus and Saint Julitta

Saint Cyr of Tarsus, one of the youngest saints of the Catholic Church to be martyred between the ages of 3 and 5, and his mother Saint Julitte, are Christian figures from the early 4th century. Their story bears witness to both courage and devotion in the face of persecution and threats at the time.

Historical background

Under the reign of Emperor Diocletian, Christians were subjected to violent persecution. Julitte, a noble widow from Iconium (now Konya, Turkey), brought up her son Cyr in the Christian faith on her own. Fleeing persecution, she took refuge in Tarsus (in Cilicia, in what is now Turkey) with her child.

The martyrdom of Saint Julitte

Arrested in Tarsus, Julitte was brought before the governor Alexander. Refusing to renounce her faith and sacrifice to pagan idols, she was subjected to numerous tortures before being condemned to death. She was executed on June 16, probably in the year 304.

The martyrdom of Saint Cyr

Despite his young age (three or four), Cyr showed an unshakeable faith. Separated from his mother, he proclaimed his Christian faith loud and clear. The governor, irritated by the child, threw him violently, causing his death on the spot.

Veneration and legacy

Their sacrifice had a profound effect on the Christian community. The cult of Saint Cyr and Saint Julitte spread rapidly, particularly in Gaul. Churches such as Nevers Cathedral are dedicated to them, perpetuating their memory down the centuries. Several sculptures depict the child Saint Cyr of Tarsus with the palm of martyrdom.

In Corsica, there are many churches dedicated to Saint Cyr of Tarsus and Saint Julitte, notably in Castagniccia, or at Piève in Haut-Nebbiu.
