U Vallone Sheepfold in Calasima
Stage of the GR20 above Calasima
At an altitude of 1100 metres, Calasima is the highest village in Corsica, making the hike to the Vallone sheepfold a potentially perilous climb in winter, at the foot of Capu Ucellu and the Great Barrier Reef.
The highest peaks in Corsica
Now administratively a hamlet of Albertacce, Calasima lies at the foot of some of the island's highest peaks, including Cintu and Paglia Orba, which can be seen from the sheepfold. On the way down, the sun sets over the cinque frati (the five monks), which correspond to the 5 summits that follow each other on the eastern side of the route. The hike is part of the GR20.
Recommendations in the event of snow
Appropriate equipment is compulsory depending on the conditions on the ground: snow boots, boots or snowshoes, change of clothes, waterproof jacket. The difference in altitude of more than 300 metres means that the snow cover at the start is not the same as at the finish, so you need to be well equipped. Favourable weather is also recommended, as is a morning start to avoid the earlier onset of nightfall in the depths of the mountains.
Also look out for the many free-roaming pigs and cows between the last houses and the start of the hiking trail.
The route to the sheepfolds
The Ballone sheepfolds, also known as the Vallone sheepfolds, are a first stop for those wishing to reach the Tighjettu refuge, just over 1km above. The gradient increases as the climb progresses. To shorten the route, the main path can be cut through the forest at two points by following the markers on the stones and trees.
Landscape of snow and forest
Despite the difficulty of the route, the scenery is a pleasure for the eyes and is also characterised by a singular silence in the midst of snow-capped mountains.
At times, you will pass through the Albertacce municipal forest, which is mainly made up of pine trees. The Crucetta stream, which cuts through the snow from its source on the slopes of Punta Minuta, runs alongside the route at several points, as does a spring.
Summer ascent
In summer, the destination and setting change completely, with a restaurant, drinks, snacks and even the chance to go swimming!
But don't forget to bring good hiking boots and something to cover up with up there.
